Why did I get a Panasonic GX1?
Initially, I was going to get a high-end compact point & shoot. Canon S100, Panasonic LX5, &Leica D-Lux 5, and Sony RX100 were my main choices. I spent days researching cameras, trying to choose between these four (retrospectively, I think I would’ve really regretted getting anything either than the RX100). I had ruled any type of interchangeable lens camera out of the picture since pocketability was very important to me. I knew nothing of m43, APS-C, full-frame, mirrorless, etc.
Then Amazon had a Gold Box Deal on the Panasonic GX1. $399 for the body only. For some reason… I was really drawn to this camera. I felt I couldn’t miss this deal. I did a little more research (didn’t know anything about focal length nor aperture) and decided that the 20mm f/1.7 prime lens would be a good lens to take the combo into restaurants and bars to photograph my friends and I.
So for $399 for the GX1 and $340 for the 20mm, I pulled the trigger.
THEN I did research and learned what mirrorless meant and how sensor sizes are categorized into full-frame, APS-C, and m43. I kinda regretted not getting the Sony NEX back then (until I played with a friend’s NEX-F3, hated that menu system). Now that I know more about lenses and how m43 has a ton of lenses and Sony is really lacking, I am even happier about my decision.
My new Panasonic Lumix GX1 mirrorless m43 camera would launch my new hobby in photography.
